The .net domain name indicates the website pertains to a network institution. This definition is broad, and has diminished in value since its inception. More often than not a .net domain name today merely suggests the website operator was not lucky enough to purchase the .com equivalent!

If you are a genuine network organisation, such as an Internet Service Provider, a Domain Name Registrar, or many other networking companies; a .net might be a logical choice. If you have the opportunity to purchase the .com, you would be wise to purchase it also; if nothing else then for security.

A .net domain name will cost the same as a .com and a .org. There are no restrictions on who may purchase a .net; similarly to .com and .org, the intended use is only a suggestion.
